Island County Waste Wise Program
Garbage is not glamorous, but a beautiful thing happens when we make less of it.
WSU Waste Wise Volunteers are citizens of Camano and Whidbey Islands who are learning how to reduce garbage and teach these techniques to others. They receive four weeks of classroom training and then share what they've learned in volunteer outreach at schools, fairs, information booths, businesses and other settings. Their work is important because:
• We have no active landfill in Island County
• Our drinking water comes from underground
• We live in a beautiful place and want to keep it that way
During the holiday season, the amount of material waste increases by a significant percent. The Waste Wise Program encourages people to give the gift of experiences rather than stuff that will end up in a landfill.
Look for the Waste Wise star on coupons throughout the SHOP LOCAL Coupon Book for those coupon specials that you can redeem as 'gifts of experience.'
